Are text messages part of your Black Friday/Cyber Monday (BFCM) plan? As we move towards these huge sales dates (seriously, check your calendars), it’s time to start thinking about how to grab your chunk of those sweet retail dollars.

SMS is a dream for retailers because it’s both simple and effective – 98% open rate, anyone? You can weave texting through your BFCM strategy, sending messages before, during and after the big days to keep customers informed and engaged.

Ready to get started? Here’s our rough guide to BFCM planning, complete with 40-ish SMS templates for Black Friday and Cyber Monday to get you started – copy, paste, tweak, and send.

But first… to help you prepare your overall BFCM communication strategy, check out some eye-opening findings from a new consumer survey.

What consumers say about Black Friday and Cyber Monday communications

To find out more about what holiday shoppers expect from brand communications and promotions, Sinch surveyed around 1,200 consumers from the U.S., UK, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, and Spain. Here are some of the key findings:

  • Most consumers (almost 57%) expect to hear from brands about Black Friday at least one month before a promotion launches.
  • Having a multi-channel approach is an effective way to optimize holiday campaigns:
    • 48% of consumers say they’ll go straight to a brand’s website to find promotions.
    • 44% prefer seeing holiday promotions on social media.
    • 45% of consumers choose at least one mobile messaging option (SMS/MMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram) as a preferred channel.
  • Nearly 80% of consumers get value from personalized recommendations in holiday promotions. That means going beyond basic first name personalization in your holiday email campaigns.
  • Order confirmations, shipping updates, and delivery notifications are vital to the customer experience this time of year. More than 94% of consumers say transactional messages are important during holiday shopping.
  • Interactive holiday campaigns could help boost email engagement. More than half of survey respondents said they’d be likely to engage with campaigns featuring interactivity and multimedia.

Save abandoned sales

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not your ordinary shopping days – and that shows up in shopper behaviour. Your deal-hungry customers will bounce between sites, fill carts, calculate discounts and apply codes, and often end up clicking away before they actually buy. That’s why abandoned carts are so common – one study found that the abandonment rate was 76.63% on Black Friday, and 80.25% on Cyber Monday.

If you can reclaim some of those lost shoppers, you can boost sales numbers during BFCM. SMS is a great place for this type of quick reminder. Keep them friendly and funny – avoid the passive aggressive ‘gentle reminders’ here. Another sales-boosting tip? Throw in an extra discount or free shipping to sweeten the deal.

Here’s how:

Want your customers to feel happy and appreciated post-sale? Set up an automated ‘thank you’ text to send to customers who buy during BFCM. It’s a low-effort way to make customers feel good about your brand, making them more likely to buy from you again.

Don’t overthink these texts – keep them simple, personal and sincere.

Stretch your sales beyond Black Friday (and Cyber Monday)

Black Friday and Cyber Monday used to be true one-day sales events. These days, more and more retailers are stretching them out to a few days or a full week.

Turn sales into feedback and insights

Post-BFCM, think about gathering feedback or reviews from your customers. Thanks to your amazing deals (and friendly text comms), they’re probably feeling pretty positive about your brand, which could make them more willing to share their feelings.

You can use two-way texting to ask for very simple feedback, ask customers to review your products, or drive customers to an online form with detailed questions. You can focus on the sale, try to boost review numbers, or cast a wider net and ask about your brand in general.

Once you’ve gathered your feedback, use it to improve processes, change the way you communicate with customers, or adjust your approach to Black Friday next year.

Automatically sending SMS messages can save you hours spent on manual tasks, improve customer experience, and keep your tone of voice consistent. Rather than initiating and replying to text messages one at a time or relying on generic mass texts, simplify common tasks with smart messaging.

Connecting with your audience and solving problems can be automated with a few thoughtful clicks. Both parties win when it comes to SMS automation, too. So, rather than play phone tag or wait for an email that sits idly in an inbox, automate a 2-way conversation for maximum efficiency.

While the concept of configuring automation may seem daunting, you can implement complex messaging simply; it’s simply thinking, ‘if this, then that’. Think about what you want to achieve with your automation, as well as common conversation streams, and logic will prevail.

We’ll break down how it works, share some automated text message examples, and give you some best practice tips.

What are automated text messages, and how do they work?

SMS automation refers to text messages being automatically triggered based on conditions (or ‘rules’) that have been set up in advance.

These conditions can be set up to be as simple or as complex as you like. From basic ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions to niche scenarios, they are easy to set up. And, once they are launched, you can set and forget them or update them as your needs change.

How do automated text messages work?

On a basic level, automated text messages work by sending out when a text messaging or automation platform detects the right conditions. These conditions could be receiving an SMS with certain keywords in the text or something happening in another app. You typically need a business texting app like Sinch MessageMedia to get text message automation to work.

How to automate text messages in Sinch MessageMedia

Sinch MessageMedia automates text messages based on the conditions of a text you receive in the MessageMedia inbox. Here’s how it all works:

To start with, choose up to four different conditions that relate to the SMS you receive.

1. Message type is [custom field]
2. Message content [does not contain/contains] [any/all] of the following keywords [custom field]
3. Date and time received is [between date & time/before/after] [custom field]
4. Receiving number is [custom field]

And, based on these, you can then perform any of the following actions.

  • Send reply SMS
  • Add to group
  • Remove from group
  • Forward to mobile
  • Forward to email
  • Unsubscribe
  • Forward to URL

For context, let’s explore ways to put this feature into practice.

5 automated text message examples and templates.

Five examples of automated text messages you could try are:

  1. Text-in competitions where you enter senders into a contest based on their responses
  2. Delivery and pick-up options that customers can choose by texting a number
  3. Reminders, confirmations and updates that senders can sign up for by texting you
  4. Customer support surveys and solicited reviews completed entirely over text
  5. After-hours and out-of-office notifications that send automatically when you’re away

Let’s go over how each one works in a service like Sinch MessageMedia.

1. Text-in competitions.

For entertaining and easy campaigns, host a text-in competition wherein participants text in their entries. This is a great way to collect customer mobile numbers, so long as they opt in to receive further communication from you.

We’ve seen this done well on radio programs that have a dedicated mobile number. For example, “We’ll play you a song clip backwards. Text in who you think the artist is by midnight for your chance to win.”

  • Message content [contains any of the following keywords] [Britney Spears]
  • Action [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [Correct! You’re now in the pool to win. We’ll announce the winner on Friday. Good luck!]
Example of SMS competition

Add a time-based rule to exclude those who have entered too late.

  • Date and time received is [after] [12/12 11:59pm]
  • Action [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [Sorry! Entries closed at midnight. Stay tuned for our next competition.]
Example of SMS competition

Your third action could be to add them to a group, so you won’t need to sift through entrants later.

  • Message content [contains any of the following keywords] [Britney Spears]
  • Date and time received is [before] [11:59pm]
  • Action [Add to Group]
  • Group [Pool to win]

Hosting SMS competitions are a great way to grow your contact list. You can also then segment them into groups for future marketing efforts. Don’t forget to include an opt out message – brush up on opt out rules.

2. SMS for delivery and pick-up options.

With the growth of online shopping, take-away and click-and-collect in our society, we are often eagerly awaiting an update on one order or another. SMS can be used to proactively let people know when to expect their delivery or when it’s ready to pick up.

Send texts with timeframe options for deliveries that require the homeowner to be present.

For example, “Hey Nate, Great news! Your new sofa is ready to leave our warehouse. All we need to do is settle on a time and date that would suit you. Please reply using only the number (1-3) you’d prefer.”

  • Message content [contains any of the following keywords] [1]
  • Action [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [No worries! We’ll see you later on today.]

Note that you can easily customise your messages by using merge tags, similar to mail merge. Add first names, addresses, times and dates by uploading a spreadsheet and matching columns within our portal.

These automations will make it easier for delivery drivers to plan out their workload, as well as keep expectant customers informed.

3. Reminders, confirmations and updates.

To keep your contact list up to date and to get the quickest replies, relying on SMS is your best bet. After all, 82% of consumers keep their SMS notifications switched on and 90% of texts are read within 90 seconds.

For instance, real estate agents often use an automated SMS service to stay in touch with their prospects, sellers and renters. Agents spend 60% of their time on the field, and gone are the days of people searching for properties in the newspaper. Now, they can be just a text message away.

When prospects opt-in to receive text messages about property listing updates, automatically follow up on enquiries.

For example, “Hey Jayden. Here are the top 3 listings for 2-bedroom units in your area. Reply with Property1, Property2 or Property3 to set up a viewing or STOP to unsubscribe.”

  • Message content [contains any of the following keywords] [1, PROPERTY1]
  • Action [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [Thanks for enquiring about 5 Violet Street. Schedule your viewing appointment today: #ShortUrl#]

4. Customer support surveys and solicited reviews.

For many businesses, getting positive feedback from customers, patrons and clients make a huge difference. Be proactive by setting up automated surveys to stay on top of customers’ opinions.

For example, shine the spotlight on your happy customers and acknowledge those who are unsatisfied.

  • Message content [contains any of the following keywords] [4, 5]
  • Action [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [Thanks for your feedback. It means a lot to us! If you have a minute, we’d appreciate you leaving a review on our Google My Business profile, too. #ShorUrl#.]
Example of SMS feedback survey

Split your automated replies based on the score they text back. Offer a discount code to encourage customers to give you a second chance and to let them know you care.

  • Message content [contains any of the following keywords] [1, 2, 3]
  • Action 1 [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [We’re sorry to hear your experience was less than perfect. Here’s a discount code for 20% off your next purchase: REVIEW20]

You could also add a third action and move your contacts into a group based on their replies.

  • Action 2 [Move to Group]
  • Group [Low Net Promoter Score/High Net Promoter Score]

5. After-hours and out-of-office automations.

If you’re on the go or are unavailable after-hours, don’t leave your customers waiting. Let them know you will get back to them when you can. Include your opening hours for effective and effortless customer service.

For example, you may be a pet groomer who has gone home for the day.

  • Date and time received is [between time range every day] [5 pm – 8:50 am]
  • Action [Send Reply SMS]
  • Message [Hey there. I’ve gone home to tend to my own furry friend for the evening. I’ll be back at 9 am tomorrow, and will get back to you then. Talk soon!]

Valentine’s Day, considered the most romantic day of the year, is here. And it’s the perfect opportunity for retailers to boost sales after a quiet January.

Text messaging is a great way to engage customers with your brand, given its 98% open rate. But, be mindful. Consumers will receive romantic marketing messages from all sides. So, how will your brand stand out?

We have some bright, fun ideas on doing this when sending texts.

SMS marketing considerations for Valentine’s Day.

Before we jump into our SMS marketing ideas, let’s dive into some planning considerations.

Design emotionally thoughtful campaigns.

Today, Valentine’s Day is a special day to celebrate love (romantic or otherwise) for the special people in our lives. When planning your campaign, content, and offer, remember to connect emotionally with your audience to help drive consumers through to purchase.

Plan your Valentine’s Day campaign early.

According to Google Trends, Valentine’s Day searches begin as early as the day after Christmas. In addition, Valentine’s Day searches increase between February 11 and 13, probably because last-minute lovers are scrambling to find the best deals. When planning your campaign schedule, start at the end of December to increase activity toward the end of January. Ensure your campaign also has a solid last-minute push (and easy links or guides to your best offers) until the 14th.

Include personalisation options for added value.

Add additional value to your products with special gift-wrapping or personalisation, such as the inclusion of a handwritten gift card (with a message of their choice). These small details can make a big difference to your customers and be the deciding factor in purchasing your product versus another.

Expand your customer base.

While it’s good to segment your audience and personalise offers for relevance, consider how you can also include as many audiences as possible. Valentine’s Day celebrations have gone beyond romance in recent years, and friends have also wanted to buy platonic gifts. Think about how you can change your offer or include new ones to reach a larger audience.

SMS campaign ideas for Valentine’s Day.

Let’s dive into 5 ideas for text message marketing to help you brainstorm an SMS campaign.

1. 2-for-1 deals.

Two-for-one deals can work exceptionally well for campaigns featuring services people enjoy doing together, like massages, dinner, nail appointments, etc. So offer your customers two seats for the price of one with a love-filled message. Here are a couple of templates to get you started.

TEMPLATE: Treat your special someone and join in on the fun. Purchase a couple’s massage for the price of one at [COMPANY]: [URL] Reply STOP to opt out.
TEMPLATE: Enjoy the country air with your loved one this Valentine’s Day. Stay at [COMPANY] for 2 nights at half price. Book now: [URL] Reply STOP to opt out.

2. Galentine’s Day.

As the popularity of Galentine’s Day shows, women celebrate their friendships. Think of creating a Galentine gift guide or a special discount for this audience to expand your campaign. You could also consider hosting an event or experience and sending exclusive SMS invitations to your VIP clientele.

TEMPLATE: Get your gal pals together this Galentine’s Day for [EVENT]. Bookings essential: [URL] Reply STOP to opt out.

Image for Looking for more SMS templates and examples?

3. Discourage bad Valentine’s Day gifts.

In the above section, we saw that consumers can wait until the weekend of Valentine’s Day to buy their gifts. Consider a campaign that discourages this and encourages them to shop early.

EXAMPLE: Don’t buy the last bunch of roses from the supermarket. Order their Valentine’s Day bouquet early from [COMPANY]: [URL] Reply STOP to opt-out.

4. Treat yourself.

While Valentine’s Day is about loving others, it can be an excellent opportunity to care for ourselves. Consider launching a campaign that focuses on self-sufficiency and encourages consumers to shop for themselves.

Put up signs in your shop or on social media, and invite customers to text your number to receive affirmations or products they will love.

5. Don’t forget non-romantic gifts.

Finally, create specialised gift guides for all the different “loves” consumers have in our lives. Include ideas for family, friends, and romantic relationships. Collection guides are simply shortcuts for those who don’t want to research or are looking for a quick last-minute value deal or buy.

The tinsel’s back in its box. The Boxing Day sales signs have been pulled down. By the middle of January, the deluge of foot and online traffic slows to a trickle. Particularly in the wake of record $23.5 billion spending during the Boxing Day sales. No wonder many retailers are left wondering, do shoppers have anything left to spend?

During this inevitable slump in sales, instead of focusing on spending (or lack of), why not turn your attention to other business-building activities? After all, there’s more to retail than the ‘ding’ of the cash register.

The post-holiday period is the perfect time to nurture customer relationships and set yourself up for another successful year. And you never know. You might just clock up a few extra sales on the back of some carefully considered marketing.

Why SMS is ideal for those post-holiday feels.

By the middle of January, people have settled into the gentle rhythm of summer following the festive rush. With many still on holidays, a well-timed text message is more likely to get noticed than other forms of marketing at this time of year. After all, even when they’re lazing by the beach, people still have their phones on them.

SMS is an easy, unobtrusive way to remind your customers about your brand. At this time of year, you can use it as a way to build loyalty, follow up on new customers, maximise cart recovery, and more. But you need to tread carefully. With your customers still in holiday-mode, they don’t want to be bombarded with too many texts.

To help you get started, we’ve got some tactics and templates for subtle, yet effective SMS campaigns in the post-holiday period.

Tip #1: Make your new customers feel special.

Tap into those feel-good holiday vibes by making new customers feel extra special about their recent interaction with your brand.

One study has found that customers acquired during the holidays will buy again from you 2x faster than those acquired at other times. And, given that brands which boost customer retention by just 5% see their profits grow by between 25% and 95%, building loyalty is definitely worth the effort.

To help foster lifelong relationships with your customers, a simple SMS that says ‘thanks’ and offers a small discount on their next purchase can go a long way. Or, if you have one, offer exclusive access to your VIP club.

TEMPLATE:
Get an additional 10% off when you sign up to our VIP members club. Are you in, [NAME]? Sign up today [URL]. STOP to opt-out.

TEMPLATE:
[NAME], to say thanks for your recent purchase from [COMPANY], here’s 20% off your next order: [URL]. STOP to opt-out.

Tip #2: Offer first-class customer service.

Customers who bought from you over the festive season or in the Boxing Day sales may now be home from holidays and finally unboxing their new toys. This is the perfect time to touch base with helpful support info to show you’ve got their back.

Make life as easy as pie for new customers, with information on how to return unwanted purchases, tips for product care, where to go for help, and so on.

TEMPLATE:
Hey there [NAME], we hope you’re loving your new [PRODUCT]. For care instructions, visit [website]. STOP to opt-out.

TEMPLATE:
Hi [NAME], how are you liking [PRODUCT]? Check out this blog to see how other customers are using theirs: [URL]. STOP to opt-out.

TOP TIP: If you use a dedicated number for SMS, share it with your customers so they can text you with their questions. It’s a quick way for them to get answers – and it frees up your support team.

Tip #3: Stretch out those holiday sales.

With gift cards such a hot Christmas present this year, it’s likely your customers still have some shopping to do. So why not extend your holiday promotions or offer other discounts to keep the sales rolling?

TEMPLATE:
Hi [Name], missed out on our holiday sale? Good news – we’ve extended our sales with further markdowns: [URL]. Reply STOP to opt out.

TOP TIP: Hi [Name], missed out on our holiday sale? Good news – we’ve extended our sales with further markdowns: [URL]. Reply STOP to opt out.

Tip #4: Offer something fresh.

A great way to keep your brand top-of-mind in the post-holiday period is by launching something new or giving your customers a fresh take on your brand.

If you’ve got a new product or service in the works, run a teaser campaign to get people excited. Or give them a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at what’s coming up for your brand in 2024.

TEMPLATE:
Loved our [PRODUCT], [NAME]? Then you’ll want to be the first to know about this year’s incredible range. Subscribe for updates here: [URL]. Reply STOP to opt out.

Tip #5: Get abandoned carts across the line.

At this time of year, cart abandonment is super common. People are endlessly browsing for bargains, and can leave you hanging.

A gentle reminder could help turn those abandoned carts into certified sales – and, given that our customers see a 26%+ recovery rate for abandoned carts with automated SMS message reminders, texting is the way to go here.

TEMPLATE:
[NAME], you know you want it. Here’s an extra 10% off your shopping cart. Enter [OFFER] at checkout. STOP to opt-out.

Tip #6: Get out in front with restock alerts.

If your most popular products fly off the shelves, let your valued customers know when new stock’s coming in.

This way, they won’t miss out and potentially take their wallet elsewhere. Sweeten the message with a discount and you’ll have them buying from you in no time.

TEMPLATE:
[NAME], we know you’re a fan of [PRODUCT]. Good news, it’s now back in stock. Even better, here’s 10% off your next order: [URL]. STOP to opt-out.

Remember, always listen and learn from your customers.

Using SMS to stay in touch with your customers will help keep your brand top-of-mind into the new year. Just remember to tread lightly with post-holiday marketing campaigns, monitor results, and make every message count.

Take it for a spin.

Last year in the US, spending on Father’s Day gifts was tipped to exceed a massive $20B. This year will be no different – people love spoiling their dads, stepdads, grandpas, and all the other father figures in their lives.

Before the big day arrives, your strategy to boost Father’s Day sales. If you sell ‘daddy staples’ like personal care items or clothes, tools or gardening gear, electronics or auto accessories, now’s the time to promote your wares. Stuck for Father’s Day marketing ideas? Read on.

4 tips for boosting Father’s Day sales with SMS

If you’re planning to send bulk SMS to your customers with helpful gift guides, promos, and ideas (and, why wouldn’t you, with 98% open rates on SMS?), then make it count. Here are three things to keep in mind when planning your Father’s Day marketing campaigns.

1. Think outside the sock drawer

Dads don’t need any more ties. Instead, look beyond boxer shorts when it comes to Father’s Day gifts, and help your customers choose interesting, useful, and memorable gifts that dads will love.

For example, say you sell handmade soaps. Instead of presuming dads aren’t your target market, think again. The global market for men’s personal care is predicted to hit $277B by 2030, as more and more men embrace the wellness revolution. With this in mind, do your research to see how your products or services could fit with what modern men want.

2. Send personalised SMS campaigns

If you’ve built up a solid database of loyal customers, then now’s the perfect time to strengthen those relationships with personalised text messages. Use keywords, coupons or special discounts to create a sense of urgency around your Father’s Day text marketing campaigns. If they’re a new customer or found you organically, use pop-ups on your website that ask for their name and mobile number in exchange for an immediate Father’s Day SMS code or discount.

3. Embrace the dad jokes

This is the perfect time for dad jokes. Particularly if your brand’s light-hearted and fun. If you can – and if it suits your brand – pepper your copy with puns to get into the spirit of Father’s Day.

Or, for a more emotional hook, why not use nostalgic imagery or copy that tugs at the heartstrings? Lines like: “Remember when…?” or “Share treasured memories …” are sure to pull people in.

4. Get out in front of the competition

Whether you run a pampering business for guys or sell uniquely dad-themed gifts, get your brand in front of your customers before your competitors do.

An easy way to do this? Use our fast SMS gateway to send bulk messages. Hit ‘send’ well before the special event to grab early birds hunting for good deals.

4 examples of SMS marketing for Father’s Day

With the above tips in mind, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of what a great Father’s Day message looks like. Of course, not all of these examples will suit your business – but they should hopefully give you some inspiration for your own campaign.

1. Reward those who join the club

Sure, Father’s Day is a great opportunity to boost sales. But don’t forget it’s also an ideal time to collect customer information and grow your database.

In this example below, a customer shared their details (for example, through the brand’s socials or website) to join the VIP club. The reward? A handy Father’s Day promotional discount.

SMS example of Fathers Day VIP special

USE THE TEMPLATE:
<<Thanks for joining up with [your company]’s VIP club. As a VIP member, you get great offers for Father’s Day, and so much more.>>
<<Here’s your Father’s Day coupon: [link] Enjoy [discount] off any item for the rest of the month. Plus, get 20% off second items, so why not treat Dad and yourself?>>

2. Offer customised and personalised gifts

Make it personal by letting people customise gifts, if you can. Show what’s possible by using Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), which includes imagery and a subject line. In this example, the brand lets customers stamp dad’s initials on the product.

SMS example of Fathers Day gift promotion

USE THE TEMPLATE:
(Subject Line)<<Customise your [product] this Father’s Day for free.>>
Hi [customer name], grab any of our [product or product line] for Father’s Day, and add dad’s initials for free. Only available this week. Use our free Monogram Maker to see what it looks like before you buy: [link]>>

3. Go virtual for those who can’t meet in person

Not everyone can see their dads in person. Use one of your text messages in the lead-up to Father’s Day to offer virtual gifts or experiences, like gift cards.

USE THE TEMPLATE:
<<If you can’t be with your dad this Father’s Day, here’s a great alternative. Send dad a [your virtual product] with a personal note. Browse our selection of [virtual products] to share with your family: [link]>>

4. Use keywords to help hone in on dad’s hobbies

Two-way SMS is a powerful way to curate more targeted gift guides. Send your customers a list of keywords, and ask them to pick the word that best reflects their dad. Then, send a personalised gift guide full of ideas tailored to that keyword. It makes it so much easier to find the perfect gift for dad.

USE THE TEMPLATE:
<<Not sure what to get dad this Father’s Day? We can help. Text us which word describes your dad, and we’ll send you some great gift ideas.>>
<<[Choose your Father’s Day keywords]>>
<<[Chosen keyword], hey? Here are some great gifts for your [keyword descriptor] dad: [link] >>

Not sure how to get started with SMS marketing? Need some inspo before you hit ‘send’ on your first SMS campaign? We’ve got you covered with five of the most common, helpful, and engaging ways to use SMS in your marketing campaigns.

Whether you’re a retailer or a service-based business, these SMS marketing examples and ideas are a great addition to your toolkit.

1. Time your special deals for special days

Everyone loves a bargain, right? Make your promotions or special deals pop by timing them to coincide with a special holiday, birthday, or significant event.

If you’re thinking about running a special offer or campaign, try to time it in the lead-up to big shopping events like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or Christmas. And, if you’ve got customers’ birthdays in your database, set up an automated message to go out on their birthday with a gift or special deal.

SMS example of birthday special

2. Create a sense of urgency

By adding an end date to your offers, you’ll encourage more people to take action. If they know your deal ends in two days, they’ll be more inclined to ‘buy now’.

Don’t forget to include a clear call to action that links to the deal or product page. You need to make it as easy as possible for your customer to get from “ooh, I want that” to “sold”.

SMS example of limited time offer

3.  Use SMS marketing to find out what people think

Capture customer feedback by sending a simple SMS that asks people to rate your product or service. Using text messages for collecting feedback will boost your response rates – it’s a lot easier for people to answer a quick text message than an email.

Keep your questions simple and concise. For example, a ‘Y’ or ‘N’ answer, or a rating from 1 to 10. And, to say thanks to those who respond, why not give them a special treat?

Feedback and surveys SMS example

4. Provide helpful reminders and updates

Text message marketing isn’t all about sales. Make life easy for busy people by sending helpful reminders and updates. For example, a timely text message to confirm an appointment. A quick update on a customer’s account information. An alert about an overdue bill. Or perhaps a change to a scheduled delivery.

Whatever message you need to get across, just remember to keep it short, sweet, and helpful.

SMS example of dental check up reminder

5. Forge stronger relationships with your customer

While promotions and reminders are both great ways to engage with your customers, you can also use SMS marketing to touch base with people one-on-one. Find ways to personalise your messages based on customer preferences or past shopping behaviours to show how you’re willing to go the extra mile.

Marketers are embracing SMS as an invaluable tool to reach customers, build loyalty, promote offers, and more. And for good reason. Text messages enjoy a whopping 98% open rate and 29% click-through rate.

What is promotional SMS?

Promotional SMS is a way of sending short message service (SMS) messages to your business’s audience. This is a great way to communicate and engage with your audience to inform them of important deals and promotions and encourage them to make purchases. Alongside other channels, promotional texting can play an important role in improving your business’s sales and retention.

An SMS platform lets brands send many promotional SMS messages at once to reach a larger audience. These messages need to be fairly short in order to be effective. Not only will longer messages make your texts less engaging, but they will be more expensive to send.

What is transactional SMS?

Another form of text message marketing is transactional SMS. This is a type of text message that focuses on providing relevant information to consumers in real-time. For example, a customer may receive a text message from your brand immediately after making a purchase. This is transactional SMS in action.

Transactional marketing is important for levelling up overall customer experience and building customer loyalty. You’ll also be able to personalize order confirmations, shipping information, and delivery updates. Since these types of messages can be short and sweet, SMS is a great tool for communicating these updates to customers.

Keep promotional SMS best practices in mind.

Your business will need to follow some best practices to make sure you’re ethically and responsibly engaging with your audience. These best practices will help you stay compliant with government regulations. Here are some key rules to follow:

  • Always include your brand name in your messages. This improves trust with your audience.
  • Choose the right times of the day to send promotional text messages. Not only is this polite, but it’ll help you stay compliant with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).
  • Be concise with your messaging. Sending long messages can cause you to lose retention.
  • Don’t spam. Send promotional SMS messages sparingly, otherwise, they’ll lose effectiveness.
  • Pay close attention to tone. It’s easy to misinterpret a text message.
  • If customers are able to respond to you, make sure to get back to them as soon as possible.

In the lead-up to Mother’s Day, Australians spend an average of $78 on their mums, step-mums, grandmas, and all the other significant ladies in their lives. As one of the biggest retail events of the year, what can you do to capture a piece of the pie?

Here are some helpful tips for engaging, effective SMS marketing ideas for Mother’s Day. And while you’re here, you might get some inspo on what to buy your own mum, too.

1. Show off your floral creations via text

If you’re a florist, you’ll know that Mother’s Day sales are a close second to Valentine’s Day. Make your business stand out with an SMS campaign that includes images of your bouquets. And don’t forget to remind your customers to get in early for the best bouquets. Add your opening hours as a helpful reminder here.

Top tip: Show off your beautiful floral creations and boost click-through rates (CTR) by up to 15% by using an SMS landing page or multimedia messaging service (MMS). Both these options add an image to your text message.

See how we helped online florist Petals thrive with an SMS strategy.

2. Curate a gorgeous Mother’s Day gift guide

Make it easy for your customers to choose the perfect gift by sending a carefully curated gift guide via SMS. Use a short trackable link to send customers to your landing page, where they can easily browse and buy Mother’s Day gifts. You could even throw in a discount code or free delivery offer to sweeten the deal.

Top tip: If you use a platform like Shopify, make the most of MessageMedia: SMS Marketing. You can automate your Mother’s Day SMS marketing, abandoned cart reminders, and so much more.

3. Make it personal for every mum out there

Mother’s Day means different things for different families, and many people seek out unique gifts or, at least, the opportunity to personalise the gift with a special message. So why not offer a free card or note with a handwritten message as part of your Mother’s Day marketing strategy?

Top tip: It can’t hurt to personalise your text messages, too. When sending SMS, use your customer’s first name to grab their attention and make them feel special.

4. Spread the word about your Mother’s Day event

Do you run a gallery? A restaurant? A bar? If you’re holding a special event on Mother’s Day – live music, perhaps, or a themed exhibition – then start promoting it pronto. You’ll want people to add your event to their Mother’s Day schedule and, if needed, buy their tickets early on.

Top tip: So you can focus on running a fabulous event, set up automated alerts and reminders using SMS for event management.

5. Seek out mums who love to give back

54% of women give to charity, compared to only 40% of men. Mums are a generous bunch, and many would love nothing more than a gift donation to those in need. If you are a non-profit, you could send out a quick message if you’re seeking volunteers or donations. Include the ability for people to donate in the name of their mum for Mother’s Day.

Top tip: Make donations or volunteering efforts tangible and memorable by setting up an SMS landing page. Use it to show the donor’s (or their mum’s) name and the amount donated.

6. Offer gifts that keep on giving

Why should we limit the celebration of motherhood to just one day? Give your customers the option of a gift that keeps on giving, in the form of a subscription or membership.

Consider how you could package up your product or service into a gift series. For example, if you run a personal training business, you could offer mother-daughter packages. Or, if you own a hair salon, you could offer a monthly pamper.

Top tip: SMS automation is a great way to maintain subscriptions or memberships beyond Mother’s Day. Send out a monthly reminder to the gift recipient about their treat – it’s all automated so you don’t have to remember.

Do you know what your customers really think of you and your business? When was the last time you gave them the chance to give you a big thumbs up or, flip side, some constructive criticism?

Collecting feedback from customers is key to improving customer satisfaction. You can also use feedback as social proof, to help you win new business – 77% of consumers ‘always’ or ‘regularly’ read online reviews before buying.

Question is, what’s the best way to go about it?

Fast and simple, SMS is your ticket to survey success

As email inboxes explode with clutter and open rates continue to dwindle – hovering at around 20% across the major email platforms – email surveys are not the answer you’re looking for.

To help you cut through the noise and get a fast response, SMS messages are the way forward.

The channel with the highest response rate turns out to be an SMS text code, with a response rate of around 40%.

Get your best SMS survey response rate with these top tips

1. Offer an incentive

To entice more people to respond, add a ‘sweetener’ – like a small reward or the chance to win a larger prize.

2. Send at the ‘happiest moment’

In our consumer trust webinar, online reviews expert Tom Goodwin gave some great advice. Send SMS survey questions in your customers’ happiest moments. Like, when they come home to a spotless house after paying for a cleaning service.

3. Brand your request

Use a dedicated mobile phone number for all your SMS messages, so your customers can see that your survey request is part of a thread from your business. If they know it’s you, you’ll get higher response rates.

4. Automate your response

Send an immediate thank-you or follow-up question when a customer responds. And don’t rely on humans to do this – your customers could respond at any time! Use automated responses instead.

5 templates to get you started with SMS feedback surveys

Simplicity is key with SMS. When you’re asking for feedback in 160 characters or less, you need to get straight to the point. To help you get started, we’ve created templates for common types of text surveys for you to use.

1. Product feedback

You could think laterally here – instead of just the standard, ‘on a scale of 1 to 10’ type question, consider asking how often they’re using the product. Here’s an example.

Hi #FirstName#, hope you’re loving your #PRODUCT#. We’d love to know how often you’re using it.
1- Always
2- Sometimes
3- Rarely
4- Never
Thanks, #COMPANY#

2. Service feedback

58% of customers will stop using a service if they have one bad experience. Putting together SMS-driven If yours is a service-based business, creating an SMS-driven satisfaction survey will help you continually improve the customer experience. It gives you the chance to listen to the voice of the customer, and respond.

Hi #FirstName#, how was your #SERVICE# experience with #REP1#? To help us make it even better next time, please leave a review here: [URL] Thanks!

3. Delivery feedback

In eCommerce, the delivery experience is all part of the service and it pays to know what your customers think. In this example, we’ve created a workflow path for customers who rate you at 5 out of 10 or less – so you can better understand what went wrong.

Hi #FirstName#, we hope you love your new #PRODUCT#. How was the delivery experience? Please rate on a scale of 1-10.

#FirstName#, we’re sorry it wasn’t up to scratch. In a few simple words, can you tell us what went wrong?

#FirstName#, thank you. We’ll be using your feedback to help us improve our delivery service.

Grab more ready-to-use SMS templates for eCommerce here.

4. Event feedback

To help you make your next event even better, ask your most recent attendees about their experience. Even better, ask why they wanted to attend, so you can work on giving them more of what they want next time.

Hi #FirstName#, we would love to know why you chose to attend #CONFERENCE#! Complete this 2-min survey to go in the draw to win a $100 gift voucher: [URL]

5. Support feedback

75% of customers answer 1 to 5 questions. When collecting support feedback, keep your surveys short and use SMS automation to space out the questions. In this example, the workflow presumes you’ve got a happy customer. You’d need to customise the responses for negative feedback.

Hi #FirstName# we’d like to ask you 3 questions about your recent service experience with #REP# on #DATE#. Reply Y, N or STOP to opt-out.

Thanks, #FirstName#! Did the support you receive solve your problem? Please reply Y or N.

Glad to hear it, #FirstName#! From 1-5, how likely is it that you will recommend our support service to friends and family?

Great! Please let us know what else we can do to improve our support experience.
