In 2022, the Australian Government announced a $1 billion bonus tax deduction<\/a> to help small businesses go digital. Now that\u2019s a lot of coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incentive was due to expire on 31 May 2023 \u2013 but, as of that date, the Technology Investment Boost is yet to be legislated. So, what does that mean for small business owners? Recently, we spoke with Business Growth Expert Caren Hendrie to get the lowdown on what\u2019s happening. She shared how accountants and financial advisors can cut through the noise and turn confusion into clarity for their clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the first things Caren says she\u2019d be doing is getting on the front foot. To do that, you need to connect with your clients<\/a>. They don\u2019t know what they don\u2019t know, so they\u2019ll appreciate your proactivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are lots of conflicting reports out, with some suggesting that the incentive is a done deal,\u201d says Caren. \u201cAs accountants, we know that it hasn\u2019t become legislation, but do your clients know that \u2013 and do they understand what it means for them? Probably not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your clients want business advice. Give it to them.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So, you\u2019ve sparked up a conversation with your clients. Now is the perfect opportunity to show you can do more than just file taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether the tax deduction becomes legislation or not is kind of irrelevant,\u201d says Caren. \u201cThe real questions become: is investing in digital tech right now a smart business decision? Does it still stack up, even without the tax deduction?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helping your clients answer those questions is where you can add value as a trusted business advisor. At the end of the day, if it\u2019s a good business decision, it\u2019s still a deductible expense whether the investment boost becomes legislation or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most business owners today want to invest in some form of digital tech. But, depending on their business, right now<\/em> might not be the smartest time. \u201cIf your clients are spending the money just to take advantage of the incentive<\/a>, then there\u2019s no guarantee they\u2019ll get reimbursed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re working with hundreds of clients, having face-to-face chats (and even phone calls) could take hours. So, we asked Caren if there\u2019s a way to have that conversation, without adding any extra stress at this busy time of year (hello, EOFY<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this time of year, clients expect to hear from their accountants. But it\u2019s also the time of year when people in finance are the most time-poor.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We really only used to use SMS for appointment reminders<\/a>, but we\u2019ve quickly realised that it can be utilised in so many other ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n
