The Physical: Sleep in Times of Stress

May 17, 1999

Q. What can I use at night as a mantra or visualization to help me sleep in times of stress?

A. The first recommendation is kava-kava as a means of ³relaxing² body and mind. Then we would think that telling yourself your favorite falling-asleep story from childhood could serve in the process. Such old standbys as warm baths, massages, and tranquil music are also of use here. We would also recommend, should you choose to use it, one of any of a number of large-headed muscle-relaxant vibrators to loosen the head, neck, back, and shoulders.

Q. What about something for when I wake up at 3 a.m.?

A. [Picture: some sort of noise generator, like a fountain or a tape playing nature sounds.]
