Face of the Sphinx

August 17. 2005

Q. Whose face is carved on the Great Sphinx at Giza?

A. The face carved on the sphynx [sic] has been recarved four times, and has generally been a portrait of the pharoah or the High Priest of Anubis, depending on the political climate of the times, and the longevity of these men. On two occasions, new stone has been added to the head of the figure to permit more recarving.
