Teachings: Polarities

November 1, 1999

Part One

We would wish to comment on the nature of the functions of Polarities, which has been tangential to many questions in the last two years within this little group.

In any given information in Overleaves, our descriptive word represents a mean point on a very flexible scale, the extremes of which are represented by the Polarities. In other words, a fragment fairly well balanced with a Goal of Acceptance demonstrates Acceptance with a flavoring of Essence. In cases where the fragment has moved toward intimacy and love, it becomes Agape Acceptance, and only in instances of validated Essence contact and self-intimacy is the Agape state achieved. Likewise, when fear has become a factor to Acceptance, it becomes an Ingratiating Acceptance, and as fear increases and Chief Feature becomes predominant, the Acceptance gives way entirely to Ingratiation, which of course makes all forms of intimacy impossible and therefore rules out access to the Positive "end" of Acceptance. This "sliding scale" may be perceived in any and all Overleaves including of course Chief Features, for although they never "vanish" unless extinguished, they can be "dragged" to a point of Positive access to other Overleaves where fear does not supersede the Overleaf function and as a result intimacy is not only possible but can be recognized and validated.

Because of the validity of fear on the physical plane, bodies can easily be damaged, rendered uncomfortable, or in other ways trammeled, which of course causes the fear response for the purpose of protection. This is of course a valid concern for embodied fragments, but Chief Feature can extend legitimate fear for physical protection into projected and anticipatory fears, which of course allows Chief Feature to gain and intensify its ability to drag the Overleaves into the Negative.

This is why we say that no Overleaves in and of themselves are ?negative?. Many of them are interpreted culturally in that context. However, we have said before and we will reiterate, any Overleaves in the Positive are of course positive. Most of them function at the balance point, which of course is the level at which they are chosen.

To consider the Overleaves, as we have said before, as the means for accomplishing the Life Task in the context of the Life Plan from the most neutral position, it might be most readily understood that moving to the Positive will tend to promote such choices and moving to the Negative will tend to detract from them. We offer this as an aid in assessing Overleaf function at any given period and as circumstances "dictate".
